"To boldly go where no man has gone before . . .."

Hartlepool Historic QuayThe words of Captain James Cook: England's Greatest Mariner, Explorer and Navigator, also this area's most famous son. The young James Cook was born in Marton near Middlesbrough in 1728 and spent his school years in nearby Great Ayton before the lure of the sea took him to Staithes and then Whitby where he launched his famous seafaring career.

Train Trail

Brick Train, DarlingtonWelcome to the home of the railway revolution.

1825 saw the opening of the Darlington & Stockton Railway the world's first public railway. The boom of the railways meant new towns and landscapes appeared almost overnight, the majority of which still exist today.

The area has rich heritage and attractions for you to explore and enjoy. Take in the Train Trail sites at Tanfield, Beamish, Shildon (home of Locomotion, the National Railway Museum) and Darlington Railway Museum to name but a few. Whatever your interest, whether it's maritime heritage, shopping in one of our many centres and towns, or sitting beside the sea taking in the fresh air,  you can be sure of a warm welcome in Tees Valley!

Roseberry ToppingFurther Afield

Further afield the historic towns of York, Durham or Newcastle can be reached by road in 45 minutes. To the South we have the North Yorks Moors, Whitby and "Heartbeat" country and to the West we have the stunning Yorkshire Dales and "James Herriot Country".
