Restored 1842 passenger station on the original route of the Stockton and Darlington Railway (the world's 1st steam-worked public railway). The museum exhibits relate to railways in the North East of England and include Stephenson's Locomotion of 1825. The former goods shed is now a restoration workshop and a short length of track is available for steam locomotive operation on selected dates. The former carriage works building has been refurbished for use by the A1 Steam Locomotive Trust who are constructing a new main-line steam locomotive Tornado.
The Museum is closed from Easter 2007 - Easter 2008 for a major re-development but some activities and events are taking place on the fairground field at the Museum.
