Attractions Retail Familiarisation Visit

visitTeesvalley is organising a best practice attractions retail familiarisation visit to York with the aim to improve the retail offering in visitor attractions in the Tees Valley.

The project has received funding from One North East and offers delegates the opportunity to visit two leading York attraction’s retail offer and commercial strategy can significantly contribute to its overall success.

Do Something Different Campaign update

  • Our DSD radio commercials will be running from the 21st December through to the 3rd January to coincide with the Christmas holidays.
  • Our Face of Tees Valley finalists appeared on both TFM and BBC Radio Tees this week to talk about the first challenge day took place at the end of November and highlight the competition as a whole.
  • Another quick reminder to anyone wishing to add any key events/ festivals taking place in January or February that you would like to appear on the site – if you could so in the run up to the New Year we’d be very grateful.

Journal Culture Awards 

The entries have now opened for the 2009 Journal Culture Awards!

The Culture Awards recognise and celebrate the achievements of arts and cultural organisations, projects and individuals across the North East, who have contributed to the thriving and vibrant region we live in.

The Awards will celebrate artistic and cultural activity, covering a wide spectrum from the arts to museums, heritage to cultural events and performances.  

Nominations can be completed online Deadline for all nominations is Thursday 31st December.  

BBC looks to the Tees Valley

BBC Learning is joining forces with BBC One and a range of external partners to deliver a brand new, action-packed adventure campaign called DropZone.

Drop Zone is an audience participation campaign which aims to inspire thousands of individuals and families to experience adventure on their own doorstep.

The campaign will be promoted through BBC One, DropZone - a new, six part series starting in January and fronted by Steve Jones. The show will feature six family teams taking on all sorts of physical and mental challenges that push them to new levels of adventure. The DropZone campaign will be further promoted on BBC One's Countryfile up until Easter.

The BBC is asking for local outdoor activity/outdoor sports organisations in the Tees Valley area to offer free or cost recovery activities as part of the Thrillseeker database.

In return they would be getting a listing on the Thrillseeker database (which will be promoted by the BBC Drop Zone and Countryfile programmes) and potentially more business as a result.

  • Now that Christmas is here we are promoting the Happening Pass and all its fantastic offers. A press release has been issued to the local press highlighting all the best Christmas events, attractions and Christmas shopping taking place across Tees Valley.
  • The official closing date for advertising in the Happening Guide has now passed - 4th December. If you are still interested in any last minute opportunities please contact Gemma Lawson as soon as possible.
  • Our website will be updated in the New Year so if you have any events/ festivals taking place in January or February that you would like to appear on the site please add them by the 1st January 2010.


My North East England

My North East England, a new interactive website which enables people to share their favourite experiences of North East England is now live and taking its first entries.

Visitors to, which is managed by One North East can post individual reviews about the region’s accommodation providers, attractions, leisure activities, food and drink and much more based on their very own personal experiences. To complement their reviews, people can also upload pictures and videos, which others can also see and comment upon.

VisitEngland announces new breakfast award

VisitEngland is pleased to announce a new Breakfast Award for its hotel and guest accommodation quality scheme members. Sponsored by Kellogg’s, the new award recognises hotels and B&Bs within the Quality scheme that offer their guests a quality breakfast, service and hospitality exceeding the normal expectations of their star rating, enabling visitors to identify accommodation where owners, managers, chefs and staff have gone the extra mile to ensure breakfast surpasses normal standards.

  • The current TV advert schedule is now running on ITV up until the 6th December and will be the sixth and final coverage period.
  • Editorial research and initial written drafts have now begun for the 2010 It’s Happening Guide. We’re also asking children under twelve who live in the Tees Valley to write about why they love where they live and the best 15 entries will be included in the guide.   • We have now begun the evaluation for this year’s marketing campaign with on street surveys going on over the next two weeks. This will help us evaluate the campaign to date as well help to form 2010/11’s marketing plan.

Top travel writer backs Group Travel in North East England

Top travel writer Simon Calder has shown his support for group travel in North East England.

The BBC presenter and travel editor of The Independent gave his backing in the 2010 Group Travel Guide to North East England, which helps tour operators and group travel organisers plan their next trip to the region.

He is one of a number of personalities who have given their endorsement to the region as a first class group travel destination.

Also new in this year’s guide is a feature on England’s biggest free event happening in the Tees Valley next year – The Tall Ships Races at Hartlepool.

If you receive an email from the tax office stating the following: “we’ve received notification by HM Revenue & Customs Refund Department that your tax payment refund has accrued up to 281.87 GBP, you are advised to respond swiftly to this mail so as to facilitate the processed within 72hours of receiving the information thats required.” DON’T RESPOND - the tax office NEVER emails to tell you you’ve money to be refunded!   • The first Challenge day for the Face of Tees Valley competition which took place on the 21st November was a huge success with both the Northern Echo and Evening Gazette turning up on the day and seeing guaranteed coverage in both papers as well as Hartlepool Mail. The two finalists also made their second appearance on BBC Radio Tees on the 23rd November with a live interview on the morning show with Neil and Di. According to a new study, micro blogging site Twitter is gaining rapid penetration within the travel industry.

The study revealed that more than half of the users (52%) tweeted between 4 and 10 times a day, with over a quarter sending more than 10 Twitter updates daily.  Managing directors, commercial directors, hotel owners and government officials are actively using the social media tool to forge connections with their customers and stakeholders.

Ryanair confirms ‘Summer Sunshine’ flight programme

Amidst the winter chill Europe’s largest airline has given a ‘summer sunshine’ boost for North Easterners with confirmation that it will again be operating flights from Durham Tees Valley Airport to two popular Mediterranean hotspots.

Flights by Ryanair from Durham Tees Valley to both Alicante and Barcelona Girona are now on sale and Airport Marketing and Communications Manager Emma Ormerod predicts they’ll be as popular as ever.

  • The final preparations are now in place for the first Face of Tees Valley Challenge day taking place this Saturday. Themed around the Happening Pass, the two finalists will be each set a series of Happening Pass challenges which will take them across the Tees Valley visiting various attractions along the way. The great English holiday is back with 40% more holidays taken in July

New figures released today by VisitEngland from the UK Tourism Survey show that trips taken within England for the month of July were up by 24%, whilst the amount spent increased by 16%, compared with July 2008. Trips taken in the whole of the UK were up by 20% in July and visitor spend rose by 13%, as compared to July 2008.

The UK wide results were also extremely positive with trips taken by Brits in the whole of the UK up by 32%, amounting to 2.1 million more leisure holiday trips, compared with July of 2008.

  • We will be attending the Living North Christmas Fair at Wynyard Hall this weekend where our team will be promoting the Happening Pass and our current competition to win pantomime tickets to see Aladdin at the Darlington Civic Theatre.
  • An e-version of the Christmas flyer and our monthly Happening Pass newsletter was issued last week to our database which resulted in a huge increase in the average number of visitors normally to our website with 1,200 visitors on one particular day (approximately 260 visits per day).
  • The activities for our first Face of Tees Valley challenge day have now been agreed. “Happening Pass Pandemonium” is taking placing on the 21st November and as the name suggests it has a Happening Pass theme.
