Shipwreck, naval adventure, literary history, local heroes, pioneering rail heritage; Tees Valley has it all.

Tees Valley is steeped in maritime heritage. At Hartlepool's Maritime Experience find out what life was like in Napolenic times at this reconstruction of an 18th century seaport and come aboard Britain's oldest floating warship - the HMS Trincomalee.

For tales of a different maritime past time, learn about the illicit trade of smuggling at Saltburn Smugglers Heritage Centre. Or discover the early life and times of the famous explorer Captain James Cook on a 70 mile circular tour starting at his birthplace in Middlesbrough, to traditional English country villages, historical sites and quaint fishing ports such as Staithes and Whitby.

Discover where the world's first passenger railway was opened at Darlington Railway Centre & Museum (closed 2007 for refurbishment but open for select events) or enjoy the village of Croft-on-Tees that was home to Lewis Carroll; you will find that there is so much to explore. Also don't miss Heritage Open Days in September, for three days key attractions open their doors for special 'behind the scenes' tours.
